Serbian international striker Nokola Zigic is undergoing a medical with Arsenal after agreeing terms over a one-year-old deal to move to the Emirates, according to reports today.

Boss Arsene Wenger is believed to be frantically searching for a striker after learning that Olivier Giroud is facing at least three months on the sidelines with a broken foot suffered during the closing stages of our 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday.

The likes of Edinson Cavani, Radamel Falcao, Loic Remy and Danny Welbeck have all been linked over the past 24 hours but it seems Arsene may have decided to shop in the bargain bin once again with news emerging that we’re close to signing Zigic.

The 33-year-old is a free agent after being released by Championship side Birmingham City at the end of last season having scored just 7 goals in 35 games for the Midlands club.

There have been rumours he could retire but the Metro are citing Serbian newspaper Sport as saying that the 6’7″ hitman is now set for a shock move to Arsenal after we agreed terms over a one-year deal, and the striker is now understood to be undergoing a medical.

The strikers agent, Milan Calasan, is also quoted as saying that Wenger called him on Tuesday to express his desire to sign Zigic and offered him a one-year deal:

‘Wenger called me on Tuesday and stressed his desire to sign Zigic.

‘He was offered a contract until the end of the year, with a view to it being extended to 2015 – we’ll see what happens.’ Calasan is quoted as saying by the Metro.

If true, this move is certainly not going to go down well among the Arsenal faithful. We have the money to go and buy a world class striker, but instead we’re signing an ageing Serbian who was released by Birmingham. You couldn’t make it up.

I pray that this is nothing more than idle paper talk because if Zigic does end up joining on a free transfer, then the lack of ambition shown by the manager to use the funds available to to strengthen the squad properly would be astounding, even by Arsene’s standards.
