Reports today are suggesting Arsenal will make a formal bid for centre back Gary Cahill in January after Bolton chairmen Phil Gartside confirmed the club will be forced to sell their star players if a Champions League club comes knocking, due to increasing debts at the club.

“If a Champions League team knocks on our door in January that’s the best time to sell an asset because Champions League teams will pay the money,” Bolton’s chairman, Phil Gartside, told Bloomberg.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger splashed over £13m on defenders Koscielny and Squillaci in the summer and despite some improvement in the goals conceeded column this season, many still feel the Gunners require a more physical presence at the heart of their defence, and Cahill would certainly fit the bill.

Another huge benefit would be the fact Cahill would be available for European competition but the stumbling block may be Bolton’s asking price which is expected to be around the £15m mark.

Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the England international but the Guardian suggests Arsenal will be first to make their move.
