Arsenal and Chelsea are being tipped to renew their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira ahead of a potential free transfer move next summer, according to reports.

Khedira’s future at the Bernabeu has been subject to much speculation in recent months after he turned down a contract extension offer way back in June, with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea strongly linked with him during the summer.

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his current deal and he hoped that a positive showing at the World Cup would strengthen his negotiating position with both Madrid and other interested parties, and see bumper offers put on the table.

However, despite playing a key role in Germany’s triumph over in Brazil, no clubs were prepared to match Khedira’s excessive wage demands and he was forced to remain at Madrid where the management made it clear they weren’t happy with how he’s conducted himself during contract negotiations.

It’s understood that the European champions haven’t held fresh talks with the midfielders agents since his snub in June and the player still hasn’t decided where he’ll be playing his football next season.

There were rumours that Arsenal had already struck an agreement with the German international to sign him next summer, but the Mirror claim that although the Gunners remain keen, Madrid are confident that no deal has been agreed behind their back.

The newspaper also suggests that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho remains a huge fan of Khedira’s after enjoying a positive relationship with him during their time together in Spain, and he could make a real push for his signature over the coming months.

Khedira will be able to hold formal talks with foreign clubs from January if no new deal has been signed with Madrid by that point, so the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea won’t have to wait long before they can try and convince the midfielder to come to the Premier League.

The former Stuttgart ace is still believed to be holding out for a big pay-day, but Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho may be more inclined to meet his demands if they could snap him up on a free transfer next summer.

The Gunners are still crying out for a dominant midfielder to compliment the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere and Khedira would fit the bill nicely, but it remains to be seen whether Wenger will be prepared to push the boat out to reunite Mesut Ozil with one of his close friends or whether Mourinho will scupper the Frenchman’s plans by luring the player to Stamford Bridge instead.
