Chelsea are ready to match Manchester United’s €13m (£10m) bid for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira this January, according to reports.

Khedira’s future at the Bernabeu has been subject to intense speculation in recent months after he turned down a contract extension offer back in June.

With the midfielder now in the final year of his deal, a move away from Spain looks likely as Madrid are believed to be reluctant to let him walk away for nothing when his contract expires next summer.

The European champions will therefore be open to listening to offers this winter if no new deal can be agreed over the coming weeks and it appears Khedira could be heading to the Premier League as the Express claim that Man Utd are set to test Madrid’s resolve with a €13m (£10m) bid.

Louis van Gaal spent over £150m in the summer but while United have a fearsome attack, they still look vulnerable in midfield and in defence so it would be no surprise if the Dutchman looked to bring in reinforcements in January and Khedira would be a superb addition for the former champions.

However, it looks like the Red Devils will face stiff competition from Chelsea with the newspaper suggesting that the Blues are willing to match United’s offer as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in another option in midfield.

The West Londoners have started the season in formidable form with Cesc Fabregas forging an impressive partnership alongside Nemanja Matic in the center of the park. But it’s believed that Mourinho wants another physical presence to go alongside Matic for the games against the top sides and Khedira fits the bill nicely.

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see where Khedira ends up and the longer he goes without signing a new deal at Madrid, the more it looks like he’ll be on the move and a switch to England remains a distinct possibility.
