Manchester United are ready to firm-up their interest in Chelsea target Paul Pogba with a €98m bid next summer after giving up hope of landing Gareth Bale, according to reports.

United have spent heavily over the past two transfer windows with the likes of Juan Mata, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Radamel Falcao and Ander Herrera all arriving at Old Trafford.

The big-money spending doesn’t look like it’s set to end any time soon as reports suggest Louis van Gaal will be handed a sizeable transfer kitty next summer and had hoped to use it to lure Gareth Bale back to the Premier League.

However, after Real Madrid had quashed the idea of selling the Welshman, Bale has also come out and dismissed the notion of joining United after insisting he isn’t ready to quit his Spanish adventure just yet.

“Manchester United? I’m happy in Madrid. I love the city, the weather and the club. I’m eager to win more silverware here.” Bale is quoted as saying by the Express

With any deal for Bale seemingly off the table, the Express are claiming that van Gaal has now turned his attention to Paul Pogba and made the Juventus midfielder his number one summer transfer target.

Pogba was tipped for a move away from Juve in the summer with United and Chelsea strongly linked with a swoop for the French international as talks over a new deal continued to drag.

A deal failed to materialise and the 21-year-old has since penned an extension, but that doesn’t appear to have put United off as the newspaper suggests the 20-time champions will table a huge €98m (£77m) offer next summer.

It remains to be seen how Chelsea would respond if United do make their interest in Pogba official, as Mourinho is understood to be a huge fan of the midfielders, but €98m would be extremely difficult for Juventus to turn down.

If Juve did accept, it would be interesting to see if Pogba would make the move back to Old Trafford having walked out on the club when his contract expired in 2012 after failing to make the breakthrough into the first team set-up.
