3 Big Money Signings To Make Arsenal Title Challengers Again

Here are the three players Arsene Wenger should sign to turn Arsenal into Premier League title challengers again, including Gabriel Paulista & Ilkay Gundogan.

A young Polish dynamo may be the only addition to the Gunners’ armoury to date in this transfer window, but that doesn’t stop the rumour mill from churning, with Arsenal being linked with some of Europe’s hottest talents on a daily basis.

The areas crying out for improvement come as no surprise to the majority of Arsenal fans, but finding the perfect candidate to complete the club’s jigsaw has proven to be a difficult task in the past. Ultimately though, everyone has their preferences regarding who Wenger should sign and here are three players I believe the boss should sign to transform us into title challengers again:

Gabriel Paulista- Villareal

This is pretty-much ‘done-deal’ after Villarreal announced last night that we’ve agreed a deal. The Brazilian has caught Wenger’s eye for a while now, due to his versatility and speed across the back-line. Often referred to solely as ‘Gabriel’, the centre-half has the attributes to adapt to the English game with ease, despite playing in the less intensive La Liga for the last couple of seasons.

Although not a prolific scorer from set-pieces, the former-Vitoria defender Gabriel measures over 6-foot and is excellent in the air, whilst he also mirrors Koscielny diverse ‘last-ditch’ approach. Primarily a centre-half, Gabriel also exhibits the required traits to play as a full-back.

The deal is done and now it’s just down to us to get a work permit, which could be tricky as he’s not earned a single cap for Brazil yet. If he does end up joining our ranks, he will provide not only vital depth to the defensive options but at just 24, Gabriel has the potential to develop further and become a world-class defender.

Alexandre Lacazette- Lyon

If Paulista papers over the cracks at the back, then adding Frenchman Lacazette to our attacking options would almost certainly provide essential fire-power to give us the edge over the other Premier League teams vying for a Champions League spot.

Lacazette has hit 20 goals in 21 appearances this season, single-handedly steering Lyon towards a potential Ligue 1 title and outwitting opponents such as PSG and Marseille. Incredibly quick, agile and strong, as cliché as it may sound, the Frenchman genuinely has all the makings of a top forward and one with proven experience domestically and in Europe.

We’ve reportedly held ‘secretive’ talks over a potential deal, and this should excite any Arsenal fan, as Lacazette is the ideal candidate to relieve the pressure on Sanchez, who has practically taken all responsibility in the Arsenal attack this season. Alexandre can utilise his pace effectively to shift out wide or play off of a ‘target-man’ (Giroud being a prime example) and ultimately fits the Arsenal style of play perfectly, and he has been likened to a certain Thierry-Henry….No pressure should you join, Lacazette.

Ilkay Gundogan- Borussia Dortmund

Flirting with the relegation zone since day one of the season, Borussia Dortmund have come under fire for their incredibly poor season so far, with  a mass exodus of Die Schwarzgelben being greatly anticipated. One player in particular pulling the strings of the dead Dortmund puppet is holding midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

Manchester United have been linked with the German in the past but, after a temporary absence from the transfer radar due to prolonged injury, Ilkay has regained his place in the Dortmund side and his physical presence coupled with efficient passing style makes him an ideal candidate to answer the continuing qualms regarding a top holding player at the Emirates.

Arsenal have long lacked a player who can turn defence into attack through the middle and Gundogan contributes to both when on-form, showcasing his specialist set of skills especially in the 2013 Champions League final, where he guarded the defence as well as chipping in with their only goal of the game. With his contract due to expire in 18 months and no sign of an extension being signed, Ilkay will almost certainly be on the move and North-London may be an ideal destination.
