Putting Players On Pedestals Is A Dangerous Game

By on April 20, 2011

After Manchester United’s disappointing defeat, there were rumors that surfaced that one of their prestigious players has been deeply involved in an extra marital affair. The real surprise of this earth-shaking revelation is that the player in question is the very honorable, model citizen of Ryan Giggs, rather than the very loathsome, common media scapegoat that has become Wayne Rooney.

However the problem is, that as a supporter, we tend to forget that all of United’s players are really just average people with an above average ability, and we should not think anything more or less – even with a living football legend like Giggs.

To no real fault of theirs, supporters normally hold their heroes in the highest regard, and when a story like the one about Giggs surfaces they tend to hold him in a different light no matter of his on-the-field accomplishments.

Following his two-assist match against Chelsea, there was a lot of debate about when Giggs should be knighted for his professional proficiencies, but now those same people may be questioning his integrity because of his personal decisions. People in every walk of life, not just football, think that they are the moral police, and that they can frown upon someone else for committing a sin, but the harsh reality is that they, too, probably have skeletons in their own closets.

The saying, “people who live in glass houses should not throw stones,” applies to everyone who has committed a sin no matter which one it is. But for some reason or another, adultery is considered to be the ugliest of sins, but let’s be honest, and face the facts that, right or wrong, it happens in everyday life – especially in the football world. Last year alone, Chelsea’s John Terry and Ashley Cole, Tottenham’s Peter Crouch, along with United’s Wayne Rooney, were all guilt of infidelity, and it’s becoming more and more widespread throughout the game.

That is not to say it is right or acceptable. But these players, because of the attention they warrant, are constantly subjected to girls throwing themselves at them all the time. It takes an honest man to resist the forbidden fruit, but even some of them have given in at some point or another.

It has been well known that these kinds of women, known as floozies, throw themselves in front of sports stars in a desperate attempt to get some of their money and popularity. For every time that these players say, “yes” to these flappers, there were probably 100 times that said “no.”

Timing

Some people are surprised by the timing of the release of this controversial story, but it should not be seen as a coincidence that it broke following both of United’s recent suspensions coming to an end. It is almost certain that this did not happen last week, assuming that it did actually happen that is, so this is just another way for the press to derail United’s attempt at a successful season.

football newsThe reality star, Imogen Thomas, who rose to fame being on Big Brother decided to sell her story to the ever credible tabloid, The Sun!

With Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson’s bans both coming to an end, there is a desperate need for the media to fuel up their distaste for United, and now Giggs has supplied that with his unforeseen actions.

Comparisons

What is most incredible is that Ryan Giggs has been long compared to George Best for the way they terrorized defenders on the field, but now the can be associated off it as well.

Best, considered by many to be the greatest-ever Manchester United player, had a personal life that has not been able to be rivaled by any other footballers. What many people fail to remember or come to terms with is that Giggs had playboy lifestyle prior to marrying his wife, who knew very well about it as well.

However, since it is a player, who is usually soft spoken and mild mannered as Giggs portrays himself to be, it is frowned upon. Seen as a complete gentleman on the field, which was evident after he offered a helping hand to Terry after he was seen going AWOL in the last few minutes of United’s match against Chelsea, it seems almost unbelievable.

Whether this rumor turns out to be true or not, all of the accomplishments and glories that Ryan Giggs has contributed to for Manchester United over the last 20 years should not be tainted for his off-the-field shenanigans.

Lets be honest with footballers as with all rich sportsman, riches and lots of spare time lead to these unsavoury extra marital affairs happening. Should stay single and screw what they want without judgement…

wtf you have slated the man, but you have no evidence to even suggest he wasa involved let alone it actually being him.

I don’t think Giggs was slated in this article. Very good, balanced stuff, about a subject that only tripe has been written previously.

Are you aware there is an injunction out on this story!

      April 28, 2011 at 10:28 am

There is an injunction from naming the person who has the super injunction.

There is no injuntion stopping saying that there are rumous circling the internet linking Giggs to the story. One of the problems with super injunctions is that you don’t know who it is you cannot name.

The is a factual error though – the lady in question did not try to sell her story to The Sun. They were going to break the story and the man involved got an injunction stopping them from naming him, but not her.

So, the *single* woman is a floozie but the *married* man – whoever he is – is a saint? Why the double standards?

If any one wants to screw around don’t get married! Adulterers, footballers or not, deserve every bit of aggravation they get – they are dirty scum!

Though you might face super rendition to Syria!

Hold on Syria seems to have other things going on there.

Maybe straight to Guantanamo bay then?

imogen only “sold her story” after the newspapers outed her anyway, and the injunction made in the court already outed her whilst protecting the identity of the player. while you seem to have ignored the court order (interesting choice!) you seek to lay the blame on imogen, who you have no proof ever intended to “go public” if the players lawyers had not done it for her and caused the paps to hound her for a week or more.

If this was really Ryan Giggs and he is the person with the injuction (super) do you not think the link to this article would not exist anymore and the article would have been removed from the internet (including the cache version)?!

Where are you basing this on? Shame on you for suggesting Ryan Giggs is involved in this story. He is an honest man. A gentleman. One of the few left in the game. Giggs has been a role model for 20+ years, and that in itself should be enough to exempt his name from this rediculously false claim. The story claims Imogen Thomas had an affair with a premierleague footballer. Seems like yourself and others in the media world have no more names to think of, so you pull out the one name, who has any credible reputation left.A reputation Giggs has built from hard honest work in his profession and in various charities.
You may not have started the rumour but you’re definiatly spreading it around. Its an accusation which bears no facts, no evidence what so ever.
It does seem something the media would do. ‘-Lets target britains most idiolised sportsman, and watch his fall from grace’.’- Yeah that would earn us millions’.
jesus, it really annoys me seeing this article. I google news giggs name, and this crap comes up.
It seems the statment ‘ you either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain’ rings true.

Yes because it is, buddy. You give young men millions of pounds and a lot of spare time and this is almost an inevitablity. Giggs isn’t the model professional you make him out to be. Yes if you are talking about accomplisments but he hasnt always been the saint he is made out to be nowadays

But seriously man, good try but back to the drawing board.

I am not a man utd fan but have huge respect for Ryan Giggs and really hope that the rumours are untrue. To me he is in a real minority in football.

Whilst footballers are human, cash rich and surrounded by gold digging female attention, i disagree that footballers are “average people with an above average ability” !! ……. I would say they have mega above average ability but i’m sorry, the mass majority of them would be out joy riding and hanging out on street corners in shell suits if it were not for their footy skills !!!! ….. Honestly – whilst I love watching football I know that there is no way i would like to sit in a pub and have a drink with one of these guys……. football clubs should be recognised for what they do to society – keeping these people off the streets and giving them “responsibility ” to uphold…… An education and the ultimate challenge for most …….and sadly, because of their upbringings and below average intelligence, this trips them up eventually …. one by one ….. just look at all the scandals in footy over the past decade from violence to women.

Sadly, these people only know the price of something ……. but not the value.

There are no accusations in this piece! What are you lot on about? Re-read; A “rumor has surfaced” and it is being discussed here, there is not one word to suggest that he is most certainly involved…or that it is true.

    @mick
“Shame on you for suggesting Ryan Giggs is involved in this story. He is an honest man. A gentleman”

Shame on you to suggest he hasn’t!!
How do you know what makes him tick? what he has done or hasn’t done? Do you know him personally? are you with him day and night? People like you anger me with your naivety and misguidance basing your opinion on a man becuase you watch him play 90mins on a pitch each week? Half the time I doubt you even know what your other half is up to (if you have one) Never mind the likes of Giggs or anyone else for that matter.

However time will tell, there’s no such thing as a kept secret.

Of course it should question someone in this position. 1. He took vows with his wife and broke them. What’s to say he is to be trusted in any other way. 2. He didn’t come clean, he gagged people and left Imogen to handle it all. It takes two to tango. 3. He is meant to be a role, this is a position he wanted to take on getting involved with charities, but what is he teaching kids? It’s okay to cheat just make sure you have enough money to cover your ass.

He is no such a role model after. That is the image that the club and Fergie have tried to sell us.

All the international newpapers are saying that is RG. If that is true, with the super injunction, he has meade a fool of himself becuase everybody wanted to know who was the married footballer that cheated on her wife with Imogen.

    May 20, 2011 at 5:20 pm

So it is Giggs after all. Hah ha ha! So much for the perfect role model image. He has always been overrated as a footballer, and while he was on his way to winning sports “personality” of the year, he was cheating on his wife.

Lets watch Man Utd fall to bits over the next couple of years as their owners refuse to spend any money and the players and manager make a fool out of themselves.
