Chelsea are ready to go head-to-head with Manchester United over the €75m signing of Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo next summer, according to reports.

Ronaldo has been tipped to leave the Bernabeu next summer by some corners of the media in recent weeks and predictably a return to Old Trafford has been mooted.

Speculation suggests United have already set aside around €75m (£60m) to try and tempt Madrid into cashing-in on the Ballon d’Or winner, while the former champions are also believed to be willing to offer the Portuguese international a lucrative deal worth in excess off his current £290,000-a-week wage.

Ronaldo himself fuelled rumours of a potential return to United after once again declaring his love for the club and admitting he’d love to go back one day. He told reporters earlier this week:

“I love Manchester.

“Everyone knows that – I have said it many times. Manchester is in my heart. I left many good friends there, the supporters are amazing and I wish I can come back one day.” Ronaldo is quoted as saying by the Express

However, it appears United may have to face some stiff competition as the Express claim that Chelsea are prepared to battle it out with their Premier League rivals for Ronaldo’s signature.

Jose Mourinho knows the 29-year-old well from their time together in Spain and it looks like the Blues boss will hope to persuade his compatriot to turn his back on an emotional return to Old Trafford in favour of a switch to West London.

It’s certainly an intriguing situation and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ronaldo leave Madrid next summer. The La Liga giants will no doubt be keen to keep hold of arguably the world’s best player but he’ll be 30-years-old next year and as shown by the recent sales of Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria, president Perez isn’t afraid to cash-in on star names if he feels the money is right.

However, if Ronaldo does leave Madrid I really don’t see him going anywhere other than United. He made his name with the Red Devils and endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful by scoring 118 goals in 292 games during his six years at the club.

He’s made it clear on more than one occasion that his heart is still in Manchester so it would take a very special offer for him to turn his back on a return next summer.
