By on February 22, 2015

Philippe Coutinho scored a stunning effort as Liverpool secured a vital 2-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After the hosts had seen a strong penalty appeal turned down, Liverpool went up the other end and opened the scoring in the 3rd minute as Coutinho curled home a sensational strike from 25 yards.

Southampton had another stonewall penalty turned away by the referee and the visitors took full advantage to seal the win when Raheem Sterling was on hand to fire home after Matt Targett had slipped as he attempted to clear the ball in the area.

The victory sees Liverpool move above Tottenham into sixth place in the Premier League table and now just two points behind fourth placed Manchester United.
