Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Chelsea target Raphael Varane with Real Madrid open to selling the defender if a €30m is put on the table.
The January transfer window is now closed but that won’t stop the newspapers from speculating ahead of the summer so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Chelsea and Manchester United are linked with Raphael Varane….
Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Chelsea target Raphael Varane with Real Madrid open to selling the defender if a €30m is put on the table, according to reports.
Varane joined Madrid from Lens in 2011 but has found it difficult to force his way into Carlo Ancelotti’s starting eleven on a regular basis with the Italian coach opting for Pepe and Sergio Ramos as his first choice centre-back pairing.
It’s restricted Varane to making just 54 La Liga appearances over the past three-and-a-half years, with many of those coming from the bench, and although the French international has been playing far more regularly in recent weeks, that’s largely down to injuries to Pepe and Ramos.
Reports earlier this month claimed that the 21-year-old was disappointed to learn that Pepe was being handed a new contract and the defender has reportedly been talking up a potential move away from the Bernabeu in recent weeks.
The uncertainty over his future has led to speculation linking Varane with a move to the Premier League with both Manchester United and Chelsea strongly linked with the player in recent months.
However, it looks like United could have moved into pole position as the Metro are now quoting reports coming out of Spain which suggest the Red Devils are closing in on a deal for Varane after Louis van Gaal made him one of his key summer transfer targets.
The centre-back is still under contract until 2020, so Madrid are under no pressure to sell, but the newspaper claims that the European champions are prepared to cash-in if a €30m (£22m) offer was made.
That kind of money wouldn’t be a problem for the likes of United, or indeed Chelsea, so I’m sure both clubs would jump at the chance of snapping up one of the best young defenders in world football if he was available this summer.
van Gaal is expected to bring in a top class central defender this summer while Jose Mourinho will also need to find a long-term replacement for skipper John Terry soon, and Varane would be an excellent addition to either squad if they were able to pull it off.
