By on March 22, 2015

Manchester United gave their top four hopes a major boost after beating 10-man Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield this afternoon with Steven Gerrard seeing red just after half-time.

After a lively opening, United broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when Juan Mata latched onto Ander Herrera’s through-ball and slotted home into the bottom corner.

Liverpool’s chances of getting back in the game were dealt a huge blow when Gerrard came off the bench at half-time only to be sent off after just 35 seconds following a stamp on Herrera.

United made their man advantage count as Mata made it 2-0 in spectacular style with a bicycle kick midway through the second half following a lovely pass from Angel Di Maria.

Liverpool then pulled one back when Daniel Sturridge beat David De Gea with a fierce near post shot in the 69th minute but they were unable to find an equaliser and Utd were given the chance to seal the win in stoppage time when Blind was fouled in the box.

Wayne Rooney saw his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet but it didn’t matter as United won the game 2-1 and move five points clear of their rivals in the table.
