Man Utd Ready To Table €25m Offer For Serie A Defender

By on March 24, 2015

The January transfer window is now closed but that won’t stop the newspapers from speculating ahead of the summer so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are lining-up a bid for Lazio’s Stefan De Vrij….

Manchester United are lining-up a €25 million bid for Lazio central defender Stefan De Vrij, according to reports.

United boss Louis van Gaal is expected to strengthen his defensive options this summer with a centre-back likely to be among his top priorities after some inconsistent displays at the back this season.

Several names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months and the latest player to be touted as a potential target is Lazio’s Stefan De Vrij.

The 23-year-old impressed for Holland under van Gaal’s stewardship at the 2014 World Cup finals and despite reported interest from United last summer, he ended up joining Lazio from Dutch side Feyenoord for an undisclosed fee.

However, it seems van Gaal has continued to monitor De Vrij’s progress and is ready to renew his interest as the Express claim that United’s chief scout Jim Lawlor was in the stands to watch the centre-back put in a fine display as Lazio beat Verona 2-0 on Sunday.

De Vrij is still under contract until 2018 and Lazio are keen to keep hold of him, but the newspaper suggests that United are ready to test their resolve with a €25m (£18.3m) offer at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen whether Lazio will be willing to cash-in and turn a quick profit but De Vrij would link-up with fellow Dutch international’s Robin van Persie and Daley Blind if he was to make the move to Old Trafford this summer.

The youngster stands at 6ft 2ins and is known for his leadership skills, so he could be the dominant centre-back that van Gaal could build his defence around for years to come.

However, I have a feeling that De Vrij is just one of a number of players United are tracking ahead of the summer so we’ll have to wait and see which one van Gaal decides to go for.
