The hosts had to wait until deep into the second half before they’d double their advantage and it was Wayne Rooney who got it, with the England striker smashing the ball into the top corner on the half-turn after collecting Angel Di Maria’s cross.

Villa pulled one back immediately as Christian Benteke slotted home from a corner to make it 2-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining – although David De Gea will certainly feel like have should have done better.

However, United grabbed a third in injury time as Juan Mata slid the ball over for Herrera to sidefoot home his second and secure a 3-1 win.

The victory sees United move up to third in the table ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.
