Chelsea are keeping a close eye on Jordan Henderson’s situation at Liverpool ahead of a potential swoop for the midfielder at the end of the season, according to reports.

Henderson moved to Liverpool from Sunderland in a £20m deal deal back in 2011 and after a difficult start to life at Anfield, the midfielder has now become a key part of Brendan Rodgers starting eleven.

The 24-year-old has featured in 45 games so far this season – more than any other outfield player – and he’s been named as Steven Gerrard’s eventual successor having taken over the vice-captaincy earlier this season.

However, Henderson’s future at Liverpool is in doubt as he’ll enter the final year of his current contract this June and no agreement has been reached over an extension as yet, despite several rounds of talks between the club and the players representatives.

Reports suggest that the midfielder has already rejected Liverpool’s latest offer of a new deal worth £80,000-a-week and Anfield chiefs are becoming increasingly concerned by the latest contract stand-off.

Much of the focus in the newspapers has been on the future of Raheem Sterling after he shelved contract extension talks until the summer but the attacker still has over two years left on his deal, whereas Henderson is approaching his final year so is seen as the greater priority.

The Daily Star claim that the situation has alerted Chelsea and Jose Mourinho is now keeping a close eye on how Henderson’s contract talks develop ahead of a potential swoop at the end of the season if no new deal has been signed.

It’s gearing up to be a crucial few weeks both on and off the pitch for Liverpool and securing the future of Henderson is going to be vital or they risk losing him to one of their closest rivals.

Brendan Rodgers has publicly stated that he’s confident a resolution with the midfielder will be found but until he puts pen to paper, speculation is going to continue and a player of Henderson’s quality is always going to attract interest.

However, I personally think the former Sunderland man will end up agreeing terms over a new deal and will commit his long-term future to Liverpool, it’s just a matter of being patient.
