Liverpool closed in on the top four with a comfortable 2-0 victory over 10-man Newcastle United at Anfield on Monday night.

The Reds started brightly and opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Raheem Sterling evaded a couple of tackle before finding the back of the net with a fine right-footed finish.

The hosts dominated much of the first half but were perhaps fortunate not to give away a penalty just before the break when Dejan Lovren fouled in the area.

Liverpool continued to control the game in the second half but were forced to wait until the 70th minute to double their advantage when Joe Allen lashed home a loose ball inside the box.

Any hope of a Newcastle revival was diminished when Mousa Sissoko saw red for two yellow cards in the 83rd minute and Liverpool secured a vital win that sees them move up to fifth place in the table and to within four points of Man City.
