As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are confident of landing Memphis Depay….
Manchester United are confident of beating Liverpool to the signing of Memphis Depay and are ready to tempt the attacker with a contract worth around €140-000-a-week, according to reports.
Depay is set to leave PSV Eindhoven this summer and he’s attracted interest form the Premier League with Man Utd and Liverpool battling it out for his signature in recent months.
Reports earlier this week claimed that the Merseysiders had made Depay one of their key summer targets and Brendan Rodgers side have supposedly opened talks with PSV officials about a potential deal for the 21-year-old.
The Dutch outfit then confirmed that United have also been in contact with technical director Marcel Brands telling reporters:
“It’s true there has been contact with Manchester United and Paris St. Germain and a third, big European club. But this time we are talking about bigger amounts of money.
“In this situation we cannot carry on with a club. It’s not the most important thing who we talk to, the player has to choose which club he will pick.
“He will make his mind up soon and we know that we are able to agree a fee with that club.”
However, the Mirror are reporting today that United are confident they’ll be able to win the race for the €35m (£25m) rated ace due to the attackers close relationship with Louis van Gaal.
The United boss and Depay know each other well from their time together with the Dutch national team and van Gaal handed him his international debut before taking him to Brazil for last summers World Cup finals.
Holland and Ajax legend Ronald De Boer also believes that the pair’s relationship could be a significant factor in the players decision of where he’ll be playing next season.
“I don’t want to say which club is more suitable for him,”
“But if he goes to United he knows there’s a Dutch coach there in Van Gaal who knows him from the World Cup.
“That’s an advantage. He’s one of the biggest talents in Europe – he has everything”.
“He has skill compared to a young Cristiano Ronaldo. He is very lively, technically unbelievable, very skilful, very fast, he has a great goalscoring record, he can shoot from every distance – he has everything.
“For me, he is without doubt one of the best talents we have.” De Boer is quoted as saying by the Mirror
I’m sure Liverpool won’t give up without a fight but it appears they will face an uphill battle in persuading Depay to opt for Anfield with van Gaal in charge at Old Trafford.
If that’s not enough, the newspaper also suggests that United are ready to lure the player with a bumper contract worth €140,000-a-week – which will be a significant increase on what he’s currently on at PSV.
Depay has enjoyed a sensational season that’s seen him score 26 goals in all competitions with the latest a stunning free-kick to help PSV land the Eredivisie title at the weekend, so it’s no wonder he’s attracting interest.
We’ll have to wait and see whether United are able to finalise a deal but as it stands, you’d have to say they are the favourites to land one of Europe’s hottest young talents.
