Arsenal Open Talks Over Potential Deal For Man Utd Midfield Target
As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Arsenal are linked with Ilkay Gundogan….
Arsenal have opened talks with Borussia Dortmund over a potential summer deal for Manchester United target Ilkay Gundogan, according to reports in Germany.
Gundogan’s future at the Westfalonstadion has come under serious doubt in recent months as he’s set to enter the final year of his contract and so far he’s refused to sign an extension after a hugely disappointing season.
The uncertainty has led to speculation suggesting the 24-year-old could be heading to the Premier League with both Arsenal and Manchester United reportedly keeping a close eye on his situation over the past few months.
However, it looks like the Gunners have now stolen a march on United as German publication Bild are claiming that Arsene Wenger’s men have held formal talks about a potential deal at the end of the season.
Dortmund are still keen to tie him down to fresh terms but unless the midfielder commits his future to the club soon, they will be forced to cash-in this summer or risk losing him for nothing in 2016.
The newspaper also suggests that Manchester City have joined the chase while United are still likely to have their say as Louis van Gaal needs to bring in a long-term successor to Michael Carrick soon, so there is still a long way to go before the players future is settled.
But as it stands, Arsenal appear well positioned if Gundogan opts to come to England this summer and I think he’d be an excellent signing for the North Londoners as although Francis Coquelin has excelled since coming into the side, they still need more depth in the holding role next season.
We’ll have to see how things develop over the coming weeks but if Gundogan hasn’t signed a new deal come June then I think we could see him make a move this summer and it would be great to see him head for the Premier League
