Man Utd Boss Holds Face-To-Face Talks With Liverpool Target Ahead Of €35m Deal

Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Memphis Depay after the attacker flew in to the UK to hold face-to-face talks with Louis van Gaal this week.

As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd hold formal talks with Memphis Depay….

Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Memphis Depay after the attacker flew in to the UK to hold face-to-face talks with Louis van Gaal this week, according to reports.

Depay is set to leave PSV Eindhoven this summer and his sensational form this season has attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs with Manchester Untied, Liverpool and PSG among those thought to be keen.

Reports earlier this week claimed that Liverpool had made Depay one of their key targets and had already held initial talks with PSV about a potential deal for the 21-year-old.

However, it looks like United have now gone one better as Dutch outlet Voetbal International are reporting today that Depay used his day off this week to fly over to England to hold face-to-face talks with Man Utd officials.

The publication states that  the attacker was joined by his agent, Kees Ploegsma, and his assistant, Kees Vos, and held secret negotiations with Louis van Gaal and other United representatives on Wednesday.

This news has since been picked up by the English media with the Mirror also claiming that a meeting took place to discuss a potential €35m (£25m) transfer with United supposedly ready to offer the youngster a bumper deal worth £130,000-a-week.

If accurate, this is a major development and it comes after reports suggested that United are confident of winning the race for Depay’s signature due to the players close relationship with van Gaal.

The United boss knows the attacker well from their time together with the Dutch national team and van Gaal handed Depay his debut before taking him to Brazil for last summers World Cup finals.

Holland legend Ronald De Boer also believes that the pair’s relationship could be a significant factor in the players decision.

“I don’t want to say which club is more suitable for him,”

“But if he goes to United he knows there’s a Dutch coach there in Van Gaal who knows him from the World Cup.

“That’s an advantage. He’s one of the biggest talents in Europe – he has everything.” De Boer is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

I’m sure Liverpool haven’t given up hope of hijacking the move but as it stands it certainly seems like United are leading the chase and are closing in on a deal for one of this summers hottest properties.

Depay has enjoyed a stunning season in Holland that’s seen him score 26 goals in all competitions with his latest strike a superb free-kick that helped secure PSV the Eredivisie title last weekend.

If he does end up making the move to Old Trafford, it would be an excellent addition for United and give them another potent threat in attack as Depay is capable of playing out on the left-wing or through the middle as a striker.
