Injured Liverpool Star Heads For The US To See Specialist, May Need Surgery

Liverpool have sent striker Daniel Sturridge back to Boston to see a specialist amid fears he may need to undergo surgery to cure an on-going hip injury

Liverpool have sent striker Daniel Sturridge back to Boston to see a specialist amid fears he may need to undergo surgery to cure an on-going hip injury, according to reports today.

Sturridge has managed to make just two appearances since suffering the injury during the Reds 2-1 loss to Manchester United on 22 March and he’s been forced to sit out of the last four matches against Newcastle, Aston Villa, West Brom and Hull.

Brendan Rodgers admitted earlier this week that there was a distinct possibility the 25-year-old may not play again this season as the club were more concerned about his long-term fitness rather than rushing him back to play in their final few games.

It appears Sturridge is now certain to miss the run-in as the BBC are one of several media outlets who’re reporting today that the England international has been sent back to Boston in the United States to see a specialist amid fears they may have to operate to cure the hip injury once and for all.

Sturridge spent time in Boston over Christmas when he was recovering from a thigh injury and he’ll now see Dr Peter Ansis, who’s an orthopaedic surgeon with the Boston Red Sox – the Baseball team owned by Reds’ owners FSG.

Ansis is due to assess the niggling injury and if he recommends surgery, then it will end Sturridge’s season and he’ll face a summer of recovery and trying to get himself fit for pre-season ahead of the 2015/1 campaign.

The hip problem is the latest injury set-back for Sturridge in what’s been a hugely frustrating season. He picked up a thigh injury while away with England in September before suffering a calf problem in October.  His comeback was then further delayed by another thigh injury in November and didn’t feature again until 31 January.

The problems mean Sturridge is likely to end the season with just 5 goals in 18 appearances and now Liverpool’s main priority will be to rid the striker of this latest hip injury and ensure he’s back to full fitness ahead of next season.
