Manchester United are lining-up a move for Chelsea’s Petr Cech as part of an ambitious double swoop also involving Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller, according to reports today.

United chiefs have already confirmed that the club will hand boss Louis van Gaal ample funds to strengthen his squad with this summer as the former champions look to build a team capable of challenging for top honours again next year.

Memphis Depay is already in the bag with the attacker currently in England undergoing his medical but it appears van Gaal has two other high profile names on his wish-list with the Mirror claiming that United are eyeing moves for Petr Cech and Thomas Muller.

Cech is expected to leave Chelsea this summer after losing his place to Thibaut Courtois this season and the newspaper suggests van Gaal has identified the 32-year-old as a potential replacement for David De Gea.

The Spaniard is odds-on to leave Old Trafford for Real Madrid this summer and although De Gea has been United’s most consistent performer this season, they could do a lot worse than bringing in a player of Cech’s quality as a replacement.

However, they will face stiff competition for his signature with the Mirror claiming that Arsenal and PSG are among the clubs also interested, with Chelsea believed to be ready to cash-in at around £10m.

If United could win the race for Cech then it could be part of a £50m double swoop as the newspaper also claims that van Gaal is ready to make a fresh attempt to sign Bayern Munich’s £40m-rated attacker Thomas Muller.

The German international was linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer but with Radamel Falcao expected to head back to Monaco when his loan spell ends, van Gaal needs to bring in another forward and it appears he’s set his sights on Muller once again.

The pair know each other well from their time together at the Allianz Arena back in 2010 but it remains to be seen whether the player will be interested in leaving Bayern, or whether Pep Guardiola is prepared to sell.

If United could somehow persuade the German giants to cash-in then Muller would be a major coup as I think he’s one of the most under-rated players in European football.

He’s hard working, can play in a variety of positions in attack and his goal-scoring record is excellent for a player who isn’t an out-and-out goal-scorer, with the 25-year-old scoring 162 goals and providing 106 assists in 391 games for Bayern so far.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but if De Gea and Falcao do end up leaving United, then Cech and Muller would be superb replacements if they could pull off this potential £50m double swoop.

Bayern do not need the money and do not sell their
Bavarian players. Muller will never leave Munich.
He is one of the best players in the World.
He does not want to move. Truly an untouchable!
