Liverpool are looking to beat Manchester United to the signing of £18m-rated Hoffenheim attacker Roberto Firmino after the players agent confirmed he’ll move to the Premier League this summer, according to the Mirror.
The 23-year-old has just enjoyed another excellent season in Germany that saw him score 10 goals and provide 12 assists for a very-average Hoffenheim side that finished eighth in the Bundesliga table last year.
This impressive form attracted interest from England with the Daily Star reporting last week that Firmino was all-set for a move to Manchester United after they supposedly agreed a deal to sign him and the player was even understood to be preparing to take a medical.
The attacking midfielder’s agent, Roger Wittmann, then fuelled speculation that his client was heading to Old Trafford after saying that the player was to join a Premier League club this summer.
“All I can say is that he will go to England.” Wittmann is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
However, it seems United will now face stiff competition for Firmino’s signature as the Mirror are citing reports coming out of Brazil which claim Liverpool have made a late move to try and lure the midfielder to Anfield.
The report, which originates from Brazilian outlet globoesporte, suggests that the Merseysider’s are showing a strong interest in signing Firmino in a deal that will be worth close to £18m.
It’s now poised to be a fascinating battle between two of England’s true giants and it will be interesting to see where the Brazilian international ends up this summer.
Louis van Gaal is likely to be busy in the transfer market again over the coming weeks while Brendan Rodgers could certainly do with adding more creativity to his squad after they only registered 52 league goals last season, and Firmino would be an exciting addition for either side.
The midfielder has all the tricks you’d expect from a Brazilian international but he also has the end product to go with it, as his 49 goals in 153 appearances for Hoffenheim prove.
Firmino is currently away at the Copa America so any proposed move is likely to be delayed until after Brazil’s participation in the tournament is over, but I can’t wait to see him plying his trade in the Premier League next season. The big question is who he’ll be playing for….
