Manchester United are confident of wrapping-up a bargain £7.5m deal to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich this summer, according to the Mirror.

Schweinsteiger has been at Bayern his entire professional career after joining the clubs youth ranks as a teenager and he’s gone on to captain the side to a whole host of top honours including 8 Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.

However, the midfielder’s future at the Allianz Arena has come under scrutiny in recent months as he’s about to enter the final year of his contract and he’s so far refused to commit hit future to the German giants, with Schweinsteiger telling reporters back in May that he is in no hurry to sign an extension.

“I am in no hurry to renew,”

“It is not something that bothers me because I have a year left before it expires.

“The important thing is that my physical problems and injuries are resolved. The rest will follow.” Schweinsteiger is quoted as saying by the Telegraph

The uncertainty over Schweinsteiger’s future has led to speculation over a potential move to England with the Telegraph one of several media outlet’s who’ve suggested Manchester United are keen on luring the midfielder to the Premier League this summer and they claimed last month that initial talks over a move took place earlier this year.

It appears United have now stepped up their interest as the Mirror are citing reports coming from the Sunday People who claim that the Red Devils have instructed Ed Woodward to secure the 30-year-old’s signature.

The newspaper suggests that United are now closing in on a £7.5m deal with Bayern and are confident of persuading Schweinsteiger to swap his homeland for Old Trafford this summer.

Louis van Gaal is likely to bring in another deep-lying midfielder this summer to help ease the load on Michael Carrick and Schweinsteiger would be an excellent signing for the Red Devils if they can pull it off.

He’s got a wealth of top level experience at both domestic and international level and van Gaal knows him well from their time together at Bayern, and German legend Lothar Matthaus believes the Dutchman can get the best out of the midfielder:

“Schweinsteiger needs a coach who will play him according to his strengths, and Van Gaal will do that.” Matthaus is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develops but it will certainly be a major coup if United were able to land Schweinsteiger this summer as he’s a midfielder who would add a huge amount of experience and quality to their squad.

There’s no doubt United have been overly-reliant on Carrick in recent years and they missed him when he was out injured last season, so another midfielder is needed and a player of Schweinsteiger’s prestige would fit the bill perfectly.
