Arsenal have been given fresh hope of signing Jackson Martinez after Atletico Madrid turned their attention to Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez, according to the Express.

Martinez has been hotly tipped to leave FC Porto this summer after another hugely productive campaign in Portugal that saw him score 32 goals in just 42 appearances in all competitions.

That impressive form has attracted interest from the Premier League with the Metro reporting last month that Arsenal have agreed personal terms with the 28-year-old but had yet to strike an agreement with Porto over a transfer fee.

Martinez then fuelled speculation over a move to the Emirates even further after being quoted by the Independent recently as saying Arsenal are a ‘big club’ in one of the best leagues in the world:

“[Arsenal]’s a big club in one of the best leagues in the world. We have to see if an offer will become a reality or not,” Martinez is quoted as saying by the Independent

“The day we’ll know where my future goes is near. I still haven’t decided, as I’m focused on the Copa America right now.”

Arsenal aren’t the only club being linked with Martinez as he’s also been strongly tipped to join AC Milan but the Daily Mail claimed over the weekend that the Italians had pulled the plug on their proposed deal for the Colombian international and suggested he was off to Atletico Madrid instead.

However, it appears there has been yet another twist in the tail as the Express claim today that Atletico have also cooled their interest in the striker and turned their attentions to out-of-favour Man Utd hitman Javier Hernandez.

If Diego Simone has decided to pursue other targets, then it moves Arsenal back in to a strong position to sign Martinez but it remains to be seen whether we’ll be able to agree a deal with Porto.

The Portuguese club’s president Pinto da Costa was quoted by the International Business Times as saying earlier this month that they won’t do business for anything less than the players €35m (£25m) buy-out clause, so Arsenal are going to have to dig deep if they want to lure Martinez to North London.

I’m personally not convinced Arsene is willing to pay that kind of money for a player who’s yet to really prove himself outside of Portugal but that situation could change if we miss out on other targets over the coming weeks.

I have a feeling the boss has his sights set on other names and will only make his move for Martinez if he fails to land any of his key men, so we’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks.

Martinez is currently away at the Copa America and I don’t think we’ll see his future resolved until after Colombia’s participation in the tournament is over so we’ve got a bit of time yet before any decisions have to be made.

I’d personally rather see the likes of Benzema, Lacazette or Higuain come to the club but Martinez would be a decent alternative if those players aren’t attainable this summer.
