Man Utd & Chelsea Register Interest In £28m-Rated Midfielder
Man Utd and Chelsea have registered their interest in Axel Witsel but will need to pay Zenit St Petersburg’s £28m asking price to land the Belgian midfielder
As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Chelsea and Man Utd are linked with Axel Wistel…
Manchester United and Chelsea have registered their interest in Axel Witsel but will need to meet Zenit St Petersburg’s £28m asking price to land the Belgian midfielder, according to the Express.
Having made his name at Standard Liege, Witsel enjoyed an impressive year at Benfica before earning a big-money move to Zenit back in 2012 and he played a key role in helping Andre Villas-Boas’ side lift the title last season.
His future has been questioned recently as the Mirror reported last week that the 26-year-old is keen to leave Russia in search of a new challenge and wants to join another top European team this summer.
It seems the Belgian international has attracted interest from the Premier League as the Express are claiming that Manchester United and Chelsea have already registered interest in the midfielder.
I’d expect United to be busy in the transfer window again this summer and a central midfielder is likely to be high on Louis van Gaal’s agenda as the club need more depth to ease the load on Michael Carrick, and Witsel would be an interesting option.
Nemanja Matic was arguably the best holding midfielder in the Premier League last season but with John Obi Mikel’s future in some doubt, it appears Jose Mourinho is on the look out for potential replacements with Witsel on his radar.
However, the English giants will need to be willing to spend big on the Belgian as the Express claim that Zenit will demand £28m to sell the midfielder this summer.
It remains to be seen whether either club will be prepared to meet that asking price but it looks like they’ll have to fend off interest from abroad as the newspaper also suggests that Valencia have entered the race for Witsel’s signature.
The Spanish outfit are now bankrolled by billionaire businessman Peter Lim so have the financial clout to challenge United and Chelsea for the player’s services this summer.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Witsel would be a great buy for either Chelsea or United as he’s able to play as a holding midfielder or more of a box-to-box role, while he also has the physical attributes to be a success in the Premier League.
