Manchester United are to renew their interest in Seamus Coleman with a £15m bid after Louis van Gaal missed out on two of his other right-back targets, according to the Mirror.

van Gaal is likely to be active in the transfer market this summer as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for to honours again next season and a new right-back is expected to be a priority.

Antonio Valencia was forced to deputise in defence for much of last season with Rafael struggling with form and fitness issues and United have been linked with a number of full-backs in recent months.

The Mirror claim that van Gaal missed out on first choice target, Dani Alves, after he agreed a new deal at Barcelona while the Dutchman has also seen Nathaniel Clyne agree to join rivals Liverpool.

It means van Gaal has been forced to look further down his list of targets and the Mirror suggest he will now turn his attention back to Seamus Coleman and test Everton’s resolve with a £15m offer over the coming days.

Coleman has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and the Manchester Evening News reported back in January that United had made an enquiry for the Republic of Ireland international.

The player has so far remained at Goodison Park, however, it appears van Gaal is ready to try his luck again as he steps-up his search for a new right-back with the Mirror suggesting a fresh bid is in the offing.

We’ll have to wait and see how Everton respond if United do table a £15m offer. I’m sure the Merseysiders will be keen on keep hold of him but if Coleman is prepared to force a move, he could finally make a switch to Old Trafford this summer.

The 26-year-old was a rare positive note during what was a disappointing campaign for Everton last year and his attacking instincts down the wing would certainly make him a useful outlet at United.

He’s predominantly a right-back but he would also be more than comfortable playing as an attack-minded wing-back, so he’d be the ideal signing given that van Gaal likes to tinker with his formation and switch to three at the back on occasion.

I personally think the Toffees will hold out for a fee of at least £20m for his services but even at that price I think Coleman would be an excellent signing for United as he’d fill whats become a problem area for the club.

If Coleman does end up joining United he’d become their second major signing of the summer following the arrival of Memphis Depay from PSV.
