With the summer transfer window finally open for business, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Liverpool close in on Christian Benteke….

Christian Benteke Aston-Villa

Liverpool could announce their latest summer signing today after agreeing a deal with Aston Villa for striker Christian Benteke, according to talkSPORT.

The Merseysiders have already been extremely busy in the transfer market with the Guardian reporting last week that Nathaniel Clyne was set to become the clubs sixth new addition of the summer after the Reds agreed a £12.5m deal with Southampton.

It appears Brendan Rodgers has wasted no time in moving to bring in his seventh signing as talkSPORT reporter Graham Beencroft claims that Liverpool have now reached an agreement with Aston Villa over the signing of Christian Benteke.

Speaking on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show this morning, Beencroft said the deal could even be announced as early as today [Wednesday]:

“My understanding is Christian Benteke, who has been on their radar for some time, is very close indeed to signing for Liverpool.

“I expect him to sign if not today then certainly in the not too distant future. Liverpool have done their work and have sealed a deal [with Aston Villa].”

Liverpool have been strongly linked with Benteke in recent months with the Express one of several news outlets who reported last week that the Reds were set to return with an improved offer after seeing their opening £22m bid rejected.

If Beencroft is to be believed, then it appears that fresh offer has been accepted but it’s unclear exactly how much Liverpool have agreed to pay Villa for the strikers signature.

Rodgers has already agreed deals to sign strikers Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino this summer so the addition of Benteke and a fit-again Daniel Sturridge will give the Northern Irishman plenty of options up front next season.

Extra firepower was certainly needed as Liverpool only registered 52 goals in the Premier League last season but Rodgers will be hoping his newly-formed strike-force will be able to fire the Merseysiders back into the top four at the very least next year.

However, to make room for the new additions I think we’ll see Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini and possibly even Mario Balotelli all leave Anfield over the coming weeks.

As yet, there has been no official word from either club regarding an agreement for Benteke so we’ll have to wait and see if Beencroft’s claims prove accurate, but it looks like it’s only a matter of time until Liverpool wrap-up another summer signing.
