Arsenal Set To Beat Liverpool & Man Utd To Signing Of £20m Star
Arsenal look set to beat Liverpool and Manchester United to the signing of Sporting Lisbon’s £20m-rated midfielder William Carvalho this summer
With the summer transfer window finally open for business, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Arsenal close in on William Carvalho….
Arsenal look set to beat Liverpool and Manchester United to the signing of Sporting Lisbon’s £20m-rated midfielder William Carvalho this summer, according to the Express.
Carvalho has just come off the back of another impressive season at Sporting and he enhanced his reputation even further after being named as the ‘Player of the Tournament’ at the European Under-21 Championships where he led Portugal all the way to the final.
The midfielder has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and it appears top clubs are once again showing an interest as the Liverpool Echo claim that scouts from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have been over in the Czech Republic in recent weeks keeping a close eye on Carvalho.
The newspaper suggests that the scouts saw the 23-year-old put in a fine display in the semi-final win over Germany before watching Tuesday nights final, and although Carvalho ended up missing a crucial spot-kick during the shoot-out defeat to Sweden, he would still have impressed those watching on.
However, it appears Arsenal are now leading the chase as the Express claim that the Gunners are in pole position and set to see-off competition from their rivals to secure a £20m deal for Carvalho this summer.
We’ll have to wait and see if that turns out to be the case but it would be an excellent signing if Arsenal could pull it off as Carvalho is one of the most exciting young talents in European football and I think the powerful midfielder has all the attributes needed to be a success in England.
With Mikel Arteta now out of contract and doubts over the future of Mathieu Flamini, Arsene Wenger needs to bring in another defensive midfielder to compete with Francis Coquelin and I think the Portuguese youngster would be a great addition at the Emirates.
There’s still time for the likes of Liverpool or United to scupper the North Londoners plans, but it looks like Brendan Rodgers and Louis van Gaal have more pressing priorities at present, which should pave the way for Arsenal to sign Carvalho if they really want him badly enough.
