Man Utd On Verge Of 5th Summer Signing As Argentine Undergoes Medical Ahead Of Move
Manchester United are on the verge of wrapping up their fifth signing of the summer after Sergio Romero underwent a medical ahead of a free transfer move
With the summer transfer window finally open for business, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd close in on Sergio Romero…
Manchester United are on the verge of wrapping up their fifth signing of the summer after goalkeeper Sergio Romero underwent a medical ahead of a free transfer move, according to the Daily Star.
Romero has been on Sampdoria’s books for the last five years but is now a free agent after running down his contract and he’s been strongly linked with a move to United in recent weeks.
Despite interest from the likes of Roma and Real Madrid, the Express reported late last week that the Argentinean international was due to fly-in to the UK to undergo his medical with United.
It appears that medical has now been done as the Daily Star claimed yesterday that Romero was having his medical tests with United ahead of a free transfer move to Old Trafford.
Assuming everything went smoothly, the 28-year-old will become United’s fifth signing of the summer and Romero is expected to be a direct replacement for Victor Valdes after Louis van Gaal confirmed last week that the Spaniard would be sold after apparently refusing to play for the reserves.
“He is not selected because he doesn’t follow our philosophy and there is no place for that one player,” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.
“Philosophy is how you play football and how you maintain your match rhythm. For example, he refused last year to play in the second team.
“That is one aspect of our philosophy… but there are a lot of other aspects in the philosophy of how you have to play like a goalkeeper at Manchester United.
“When you are not willing to follow the principles of the philosophy, then there is only one way and that is out.
“It is a big disappointment. We thought that he would follow our philosophy. It is a pity because we have given him the opportunity to rehabilitate, gave him a contract and then he is fit to play.
“If you do not play in the first team, our philosophy is to play in the second team and he did not do that.”
If and when Romero seals his move to United, I expect he’ll become the clubs No.2 behind either David De Gea or whoever is brought in to replace the Spaniard should he complete his proposed move to Real Madrid.
Romero has proven himself to be a top goalkeeper over the past few years and has racked up 62 appearances for Argentina, so I think he’ll be an excellent piece of business for United and who knows, if he impresses enough maybe he’ll eventually replace De Gea in the long-term.

van Gaal knows him well from their time together at AZ Alkmaar and it looks like it’ll only be a matter of time before the pair are reunited at Old Trafford this summer.
