Arsenal Transfer News: Wenger Closing In On Major Signing
BT Sport host Jake Humphrey has claimed that Arsenal are closing in on a major new signing that would make them genuine title challengers this season
With the summer transfer window in full swing, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the new season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Arsenal close in on a major signing…..
BT Sport host Jake Humphrey has claimed that Arsenal are closing in on a major new signing that would make them genuine title challengers this season, as reported by the Mirror.
Arsene Wenger has been relatively quiet in the transfer market this summer with Petr Cech the only significant new addition through the door at the Emirates Stadium.
However, that could all be about to change as according to a source close to BT Sports presenter Jake Humphrey, Arsenal are closing in on a signing that he claims would make the Gunners genuine title challengers.
He took to Twitter to say:
“A source who is rarely wrong tells me Arsenal are close to the signing that would make them genuine contenders. We shall see…”
Obviously Humphrey’s claims have got the Arsenal fan-base speculating over who this mystery player could be but the statement comes at a time when we’re being strongly linked with a move for Karim Benzema.
Spanish football expert Graham Hunter told talkSPORT last week that a deal for the French international could be doable due to Real Madrid’s €500m debts and they need the money to finance a move for David De Gea.
The speculation led to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry telling Sky Sports on Friday that he thinks we could win the title if Wenger successfully lured Benzema to North London. This was just hours before Humphrey’s posted his Tweet so I think it’s safe to assume that the BT Sport presenter was hinted at Benzema.
To add further fuel to the fire, celebrity Arsenal fan and shareholder Piers Morgan also took to Twitter last night to claim that he too has heard the club are in advanced talks to sign Benzema, while an Italian journalist also claimed a deal is on the verge of completion, so it certainly appears something is brewing behind the scenes.

Today’s meeting ok between Arsenal and Real. Deal almost closed, Benzema will arrive to London on Sunday.

Wenger is publicly denying his interest but you’d expect nothing less from a manager who notoriously keeps his cards close to his chest and he’s already hinted on more than one occasion he’s ready to splash the cash if a top class player he likes becomes available.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but I think Benzema would be a sensational signing if we could pull this off and the 27-year-old leading an attack in front of the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil would be a match for anybody.
With Benzema leading the line up front, Arsenal would be genuine title challengers. The North Londoners start the season at odds of 12/1 but that would look excellent value if we were able to land the French hitman. I’d guess we’d immediately come in to around 10/1, if not lower, should the striker arrive at the Emirates.
So it could be worth sticking a bet on now before Wenger makes his move for Benzema and if you do, head over to Betfred as they have some great welcome bonuses you can take advantage of.
I still think Manchester City and Chelsea are the early favourites but that would all change if Arsene gets his chequebook out and manages to sign a world class striker likes Benzema.
