Chelsea are set to table an improved £30m offer for John Stones this week as Jose Mourinho looks to finally land the talented Everton centre-back, according to the Guardian.

Mourinho has been relatively quiet in the transfer market so far this summer with Asmir Begovic and Radamel Falcao his only two significant new additions but it appears the Portuguese coach is trying hard to make Stones his next big-money signing.

The Blues have been strongly linked with a move for the 21-year-old this summer but have so far reportedly seen offers worth £20m and £26m rejected by Everton – who continue to insist the defender isn’t for sale [via Guardian].

The Merseysiders have also been angered by Chelsea’s public pursuit of Stones and the Mirror claimed earlier this month that Manchester United were looking to take advantage of the tension between the two clubs after making contact with the player’s agent to express their interest in taking him to Old Trafford.

However, the Guardian are reporting today that Chelsea are now ready to step-up their efforts to land Stones and will test Everton’s resolve with a fresh £30m offer, with the new bid expected to be submitted at some point this week.

It remains to be seen how Everton will respond to such a bid but I think it must surely be getting to a point where they have to start giving serious consideration to cashing-in.

Stones has developed into one of the most promising young defenders in British football since joining Everton two years ago but £30m would be a huge fee for a player who has only played 45 Premier League games so far in his short career.

Roberto Martinez could do a lot with that sort of money too as he’d be able to bring in two or three top class players and they could end up having a stronger squad overall by cashing in on Stones this summer.

However, if Everton do agree to sell it will be interesting to see if Man Utd step-up their interest and decide to rival Chelsea for his signature. Louis van Gaal needs another centre-back and Stones would be an excellent addition at Old Trafford.

Chelsea are clearly in pole position as it stands and Stones would be the ideal long-term replacement for John Terry, but how much first team football would he play while the Blues skipper is still playing at the top of his game?

Stones may need to wait a year or two before breaking into the Chelsea first team whereas he could be the player van Gaal build’s his new look defence around, so I’d argue that if the youngster has a straight choice, he may be better off heading to United.

But talk of a move to Old Trafford is still some way off and it looks like Chelsea are set to establish themselves as favourites with a new £30m offer, so United will have to act fast if they do want to sign Stones this summer.
