Chelsea have confirmed on Chelseafc.com the signing of Michael Hector after the defender joined the club from Reading on a five-year contract.

News broke early on transfer deadline day that the Blues were in negotiations over a surprise move for the 23-year-old after keeping a close eye on his progress this season.

It appears a Jose Mourinho gave the green light to a move and a deal was swiftly agreed with Reading and Chelsea released a statement on their official website a short time ago confirming Hector had joined the club on a five-year contract.

No official fee has been released by either club but the Daily Mail claim Chelsea have splashed out £4.5m on the defender with Hector heading back to the Madejski Stadium on loan for the rest of the campaign.

A statement on Chelseafc.com said:

Chelsea Football Club have today completed the signing of Michael Hector from Reading.

The 23-year-old centre-back, who has signed a five-year-contract, will return to Reading and spend the remainder of this season on loan at the Madejski Stadium.

The Jamaican international has enjoyed a busy career that’s seen him spend time out on loan at 12 different clubs since joining Reading’s youth academy as a youngster in 2009.

The centre-back eventually broke into the Reading first team in 2014 has gone on to become an important part of their defence, and made 49 appearances in all competitions last season.

Hector is a self-confessed Chelsea fan so he’ll no doubt be delighted to have joined his boyhood team and he’ll hope to continue his development with Reading over the course of this season before returning to Stamford Bridge next summer to push for a first team place.

Jose Mourinho has been busy on transfer deadline day as Hector’s arrival comes shortly after the Blues had wrapped-up the signing of fellow defender Papy Djilobodji with the duo becoming Chelsea’s sixth and seventh major signings of the summer window.
