Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of Christian Benteke after he picked up a thigh injury less than two weeks before Liverpool take on fierce rivals Manchester United.

Benteke completed the full ninety minutes during Liverpool shock 3-0 defeat to West Ham at Anfield on Saturday afternoon but the Express claim the 24-year-old suffered a thigh strain during that match.

The newspaper says that the striker has been unable to join up with the Belgian squad as a result and is expected to miss their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Bosnia on Thursday.

However, the good news for both club and country is the Express suggest that initial scans show the injury is a minor one so Benteke could return for Belgium’s trip to Cyprus on Sunday.

If that was to be the case, then the former Aston Villa hitman should be available for when Liverpool take on Man Utd after the international break on September 12.

Liverpool will no doubt be keeping a close eye on his recovery over the coming days as any slight set-back would make Benteke a major doubt for their trip to Old Trafford in less than two weeks time.

Benteke has scored once since making his big-money move from Villa in the summer and he’s already a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ side with Daniel Sturridge still on the sidelines through injury.

Therefore, I’m sure the Liverpool boss would prefer to see his player rested over the entire international break to ensure he’s ready for United as the Merseysiders can’t afford to lose him for such an important game this early on in the season.
