Liverpool have been hit by a fresh injury blow as striker Christian Benteke has been ruled out for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury, according to the Guardian.

Benteke was substituted at half-time during Liverpool’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Norwich City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon after picking up a hamstring strain.

The striker was sent to have an MRI scan on Tuesday to determine the full extent of the injury and it looks like he’s now set for a spell on the sidelines.

The Guardian are one of several media outlets who are reporting this evening that the 24-year-old has been ruled out for around two weeks meaning he’s now a major doubt for next month’s Merseyside derby.

Benteke is certain to miss tonight’s Capital One Cup clash with Carlisle, Saturday’s showdown against former club Aston Villa as well as next weeks Europa League clash against FC Sion.

Liverpool are then scheduled to take on Everton on October 4th and unless Benteke makes a remarkable recovery, the Belgian international is highly unlikely to feature at Goodison Park.

The news will come as a big blow to Brendan Rodgers as the pressure continues to mount on his shoulders following a disappointing start to the new season that’s seen their win-less run extent to five games.

Captain Jordan Henderson has been ruled out for several weeks after undergoing surgery on a broken foot so another injury to a key first team player is the last thing Rodgers’ needed right now.

The good news for the Northern Irishman is that Daniel Sturridge is now fit again after marking his comeback with 60 minutes against Norwich at the weekend. Danny Ings also got his Anfield career up-and-running after scoring against the Canaries having replaced Benteke on Saturday, so it looks like the former Burnley man could be given an extended run in the team over the coming weeks.
