Liverpool have been dealt a fresh injury blow with Dejan Lovren facing at least 2 months on the sidelines with an ankle injury, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Lovren was forced off in extra-time during Liverpool’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Carlisle in the Capital One Cup last night, with the Reds eventually progressing after winning a penalty shoot-out 3-2.

The Croatian international appeared in some discomfort as he was stretched off after twisting his right ankle and was given an oxygen mask as he left the field of play.

The 26-year-old will undergo a scan to determine the full extent of the injury but the Liverpool Echo are reporting that he has suffered suspected ankle ligament damage.

Nothing has been confirmed as yet but the local newspaper says that Liverpool medical staff have indicated that Lovren is now facing at least two months on the sidelines if their fears are realised.

If the injury is confirmed, it will be a huge blow to Lovren as he has endured a difficult start to the new season and has recently lost his first team place to Mamadou Sakho.

The news will also come as another blow to manager Brendan Rodgers as the pressure continues to pile on his shoulders after another disappointing performance last night.

The last thing the Northern Irishman needed was another injury with Christian Benteke sidelined with a hamstring problem while skipper Jordan Henderson is out for the foreseeable future after undergoing surgery on a broken foot.

There was some good news to come from last night as first team coach Gary McAllister claims Roberto Firmino ‘seems fine’ after being forced off with a back injury against Carlisle.

The Brazilian international landed awkwardly and was substituted in the 35th minute but McAllister suggests the injury may not be a serious one.

“Like Dejan, he [Firmino] landed badly,” McAllister is quoted as saying by the BBC

“It was just a ball he went up for and he’s landed on the base of his spine, just on his lower back. He seems fine. “

I’m sure Liverpool will be praying Firmino hasn’t suffered any serious injury as they are in a dire run of form that’s seen then fail to win any of their previous six games in all competitions, so Rodgers badly needs to beat Aston Villa this weekend to ease the mounting pressure.
