Manchester United will look to close in on the top four when they take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.

Ahead of the game, Louis van Gaal has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference today and has given ManUtd.com a team news and injury update.

Unfortunately the United boss confirmed that Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to miss the trip to the North East after suffering a knee injury during Saturday’s last-gasp victory over Sheffield United.

The German international sustained the problem with 10 minutes to go at Old Trafford but was forced to see-out the remainder of the FA Cup third round clash as United had already used all three of their permitted substitutes.

Speaking to the press this afternoon, van Gaal suggested Schweinsteiger will miss the Newcastle game but didn’t give any indication as to how long the midfielder will be on the sidelines for.

The Dutchman also revealed that he’ll have to wait and see how the rest of his players recover following Saturday’s win over Sheffield United before he can pick his final starting eleven to face the Geordies.

He told the clubs website:

“Bastian is injured, that we know. We have seen that because he could not move.”

“In spite of playing more or less with 10-and-a-half men, we beat Sheffield United and we were very happy with that.”

“It is so close to the match. We have to recover. Yesterday we recovered but also we have to see if the players are still overloaded or not. Until this moment, the players have not arrived so we have to wait and see.

“After I know all the data, I can line up. That is why it is always difficult in a period when we have to play a lot of matches. You have to wait to see how the players are recovering of the load in the match.”

It will come as a blow for United to lose Schweinsteiger for what is going to be a pivotal week in their season as a trip Liverpool awaits following tomorrow night’s clash against Newcastle.

We’ll have to wait and see if the midfielder recovers in time to make the trip to Anfield on Sunday but for now Schweinsteiger joins Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo on the sidelines.
