By on January 12, 2016

Wayne Rooney scored twice but it wasn’t enough as Manchester United were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw by Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.

United got off to the perfect start when they were awarded a ninth minute penalty after Mbemba handled a Fellaini header following a corner. Rooney made no mistake from the spot to make it 0-1.

It looked like the visitors were well on their way to a crucial three points when Jesse Lingard finished off a clinical counter-attack that involved Ander Herrera and Rooney to make it 0-2 in the 38th minute.

However, Newcastle cut the deficit just before half time when Wijnaldum volleyed home for 1-2 in the 42nd minute and Mitrovic made it 2-2 from the spot midway through the second half after being fouled in the area by Smalling.

United retook the lead in the 79th minute when Rooney drilled home from the edge of the area but Newcastle rallied and rescued a point in the final minute as Dummett’s shot deflected past De Gea for 3-3.
