Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has offered a positive injury update as he looks to make a swift return from a hamstring injury.

The Croatian international has been on the sidelines since suffering the problem during Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Stoke City in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final earlier this month.

Initial fears were that Lovren could be facing an extended spell on the treatment table and with Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho also out injured at the time, Jurgen Klopp was forced to recall Tiago Llori from loan and bring in Steven Caulker until the end of the season as cover at the back.

However, it looks as though Lovren is ready to make a swift return to action as the centre-back has told Liverpoolfc.com that although they won’t be taking any unnecessary risks over his fitness, he hopes to be back in contention ‘this week’.

After being named as the Standard Chartered Player of the Month for December, the Reds No.6 said:

“I’m very satisfied with my injury, it’s going really quickly again,”

“I cannot say exactly but I’ll be back soon, hopefully this week. We will not take a risk for one or two games. We still need time, but I’m coming back.

“[There are] so many games and, unfortunately, so many injuries also. The Premier League is so tough but we have a good squad, a big squad and a new player in, so it’s good.”

Lovren’s return to fitness will come as a major boost to Klopp as the Liverpool defence was carved open on several occasions during last night’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Arsenal, so the German coach will be pleased to have another experienced central defender to call upon.

It’s highly unlikely Lovren will be available for Sunday’s visit of Manchester United but he could make the FA Cup replay with Exeter next week or failing that, the Premier League trip to Norwich on the 23rd.
