Chelsea Join Arsenal In Race For £37m Bundesliga Star

Chelsea are ready to battle it out with London rivals Arsenal over the signing of £37m-rated Borussia Mochengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka.

With the winter transfer window now open for business, manager’s are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of the second half of the season. Today, Chelsea and Arsenal are linked with Granit Xhaka….

Chelsea are ready to battle it out with London rivals Arsenal over the signing of £37m-rated Borussia Mochengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to the Daily Star.

The 23-year-old sparked transfer rumours after revealing his desire to leave Mochengladbach to join a top club and the Star reported earlier this month that Arsenal were lining-up a big-money move to sign the midfielder.

The Gunners only recently completed the signing of Egyptian international midfielder Mohamed Elneny from FC Basel but with Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini all expected to leave at the end of the season, Arsene Wenger needs further long-term reinforcements and Xhaka is seemingly on his radar.

However, it looks as though Arsenal are going to face some stiff competition as the Daily Star are citing a report coming from German publication Bild which claims that Chelsea have now entered the chase for Xhaka’s signature.

The Blues have endured a disastrous season and look destined to miss out on the top four as they currently sit 12 points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham with 16 games remaining, so it looks as though Xhaka could be part of a rebuilding job at Stamford Bridge this summer.

The London duo would have been listening with interest after Mochengladbach boss Max Eberl admitted earlier this week that the club may have to sell Xhaka in the summer if a ‘dizzy’ offer comes in for the midfielder.

“I don’t know what will happen in the summer,” Eberl is quoted as saying by the Daily Star

“There are always situations a club has to give consideration to. It depends on our sporting success, it depends on the performance of Granit.

“It also depends on the numbers [the amount being offered by clubs], which can go into levels that make you dizzy.”

The Swiss international has developed into one of Mochengladbach’s most important players since joining the club in 2012 and with his current contract running until 2019, the Star suggest it would take an offer of £37m to persuade the Bundesliga outfit to cash-in.

We’ll have to wait and see whether Arsenal or Chelsea are prepared to pay that kind of money but Xhaka is certainly an exciting talent who’d be an excellent addition for either club if they could get a deal agreed.
