The pressure is mounting once again on the shoulders of Louis van Gaal as Manchester United slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Old Trafford this afternoon.

United’s unbelievable record of not scoring a goal in the first half of any home game since early December continued as they were restricted to long-range efforts on the Southampton goal during the opening 45 minutes.

Things didn’t get much better after the break with neither side showing much threat in the final third and both United and the Saints were struggling to create any clear-cut chances.

However, just as it looked as though we were heading for a 0-0 draw, Charlie Austin came off the bench to head home an unlikely winner for the visitors as he found the bottom corner from a free header in the 86th minute.

There was no response from United so they slipped to a disappointing defeat which now leaves them sitting five points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham after 23 games played.
