Arsenal have been told to try again in the summer after seeing a formal bid rejected by Napoli for Brazilian midfielder Jorginho, according to the Express.

The 24-year-old has been impressing at the Stadio San Paulo since joining the club from Verona in 2014 and it’s led to strong interest from Arsene Wenger with the boss sending scouts to keep a close eye on the midfielder throughout 2015.

It looked as though any hopes of luring Jorginho away from Napoli had ended when he signed a new two-year contract extension last month which ties him to the Serie A club until 2020.

However, it doesn’t appear to have put Wenger off as the Express are carrying a report from Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb which claims Arsenal have submitted a formal offer for Jorginho’s signature in the hope of getting a deal wrapped-up before the winter window slams shut next week.

The newspaper suggests that while Napoli have rejected our initial bid and made it clear they won’t sell this month, they’ve told us to come back when the season is over as they may be more willing to cash-in on the South American star in the summer.

That may actually work out for the better as I personally don’t see any need for Arsenal to bring in another central midfielder this month. We’ve only recently brought in Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin is due to make his playing return this weekend, so we have plenty of cover now in the middle of the park even with Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla still injured.

Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky are set to leave the Emirates when their contracts expire in June while Mikel Arteta could move in to a coaching role, so I think it would make sense for Wenger to wait until the summer before looking to bring another midfielder to the club.

Jorginho would be an interesting option as he’s shown plenty of promise during his time in Italy but I would personally rather see us go for one of the Bender brothers or Victor Wanyama.
