Liverpool Transfer News: Player Tells Club He Wants Move As Reds Table Formal Bid

Liverpool have tabled a formal offer for defender Joel Matip and the player has informed Schalke he wants to leave the club this month, according to Sky Sports

With the winter transfer window in full swing, manager’s are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of the second half of the season. Today, Liverpool are linked with Joel Matip…

Liverpool have tabled a formal offer for centre-back Joel Matip and the player has informed Schalke he wants to leave the club this month, according to Sky Sports News.

Matip has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield in recent months with Sky Sports reporting in early January that Jurgen Klopp was keen to lure the Cameroonian international to Merseyside before the close of the winter window.

It looks like Liverpool have now stepped-up their interest in the 24-year-old with Sky Sports now citing their sources in Germany as claiming that a formal offer has now been put on the table for his signature.

No indication is given as the how much Liverpool have put forward or whether Schalke intend to sell, but the report does suggest that Matip has informed the Bundesliga outfit he wants to leave the club.

The defender has less than six months left on his contract and he’s so far refused Schalke’s attempts to tie him down to a new deal, so it looks like the German club are going to have to sell at a reasonable price this month or lose him for nothing in the summer.

Klopp has already signed Steven Caulker on loan from QPR but the former Borussia Dortmund coach appears keen on further strengthening his defensive options this month after seeing his team concede 32 league goals already this season.

Matip has been on Klopp’s radar since his time in Germany and the 6ft 4in centre-back would be an imposing presence in the Liverpool back-line if they were able to strike a deal and take him to Anfield this month.

Martin Skrtel is currently on the sidelines with a hamstring injury while Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho have also spent time on the treatment table in recent months. Matip on the other hand has been ever present for Schalke in the league this season.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Reds managed to get a deal agreed and Matip would be an excellent addition to the Liverpool squad.
