Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has offered ManUtd.com a team news and injury update ahead of their Premier League clash with Chelsea this weekend.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference this afternoon, van Gaal confirmed that Phil Jones is getting closer to making his comeback after taking part in full training today.

The defender has been on the sidelines in recent weeks with a foot injury but is now back in full training – although it remains to be seen whether he’ll be in contention to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The United boss also revealed that Marcos Rojo is progressing well in his recovery from shoulder surgery, but the Argentinean international isn’t able to train freely just yet.

van Gaal also says Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia are making good progress in their recoveries from serious injury but the duo are still some way off being able to return to full training so they remain on the sidelines along with Ashley Young, who has been ruled out for the foreseeable future with a groin injury.

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is also still unavailable due to a knee injury which he picked up against Sheffield United on January 9 and although van Gaal didn’t divulge any possible comeback date for the German international, recent reports have suggested he won’t be back until nearer the end of the month.

Here is what van Gaal told the clubs website:

“There is some light at the end of the tunnel, I think,”

“Jones is coming back. He has trained today [Friday] with the first team so that’s good. Rojo is doing well. It’s not that he can train with us but still he is doing well. Shaw is doing well and Valencia is doing well so it’s not bad. Schweinsteiger is still out, yes.”

Man Utd will head in to the weekend action looking to build on Tuesday night’s impressive 3-0 victory over Stoke City and as they look to give their Champions League hopes a major boost with a positive result against Chelsea.
