Manchester United have been handed a major injury boost with the news that David De Gea’s knee injury isn’t serious and he should be fit to face Arsenal next weekend, according to the Daily Mail.

De Gea was forced to pull out of Thursday night’s Europa League last 32 clash with FC Midtjylland after suffering a knee injury while making a routine save during the warm up.

The Spaniard watched from the stands as, despite an impressive performance from stand-in goalkeeper Sergio Romero, United slumped to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to the Danish minnows.

De Gea arrived back in Manchester this morning and was sent to have further scans on his knee injury to determine the full extent of the problem, with United fearing he was set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

However, it looks as though they’ve been handed a huge boost as the Daily Mail claim that the injury isn’t serious as scan results show no significant damage to the knee and the 25-year-old is set to return within days rather than weeks.

The newspaper says that De Gea is still expected to miss Monday night’s FA Cup fifth round trip to Shrewsbury Town but could be back between the sticks for next Thursday’s Europa League second leg against FC Midtjylland at Old Trafford.

If the Spanish international still misses out against the Danes, then De Gea should make his comeback when Arsenal arrive in Manchester for their crucial Premier League showdown next Sunday.

The news will come as a welcome relief to beleaguered boss Louis van Gaal as the Dutchman is clinging on to the United job after another inept display last night and the last thing he’d want is his No.1 ruled out for an extended period of time.

United already have a number of players on the sidelines with Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj all currently unavailable for selection.
