Manchester United’s injury woes continue as Louis van Gaal has confirmed that three more players picked up knocks during the win over Shrewsbury Town.
Manchester United’s injury woes continue as Louis van Gaal has confirmed that three more players picked up knocks during the win over Shrewsbury Town last night.
United got back to winning ways with goals from Chris Smalling, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard securing a 3-0 win at Greenhous Meadow to book United’s place in the last eight of the FA Cup.
However, the game came at a cost as van Gaal revealed to ManUtd.com after the game that Will Keane picked up a groin strain during his 20 minute cameo appearance in the second half while Lingard also suffered a minor knee injury.
Left-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson returned to the starting eleven following illness but the youngster was forced off at half-time after also suffering a knock during the opening 45 minutes against Shrewsbury.
van Gaal told the clubs website:
“It is unbelievable because [in addition to Keane] I have taken Borthwick-Jackson off because he was injured and Jesse Lingard was struggling towards the end too,”
“I changed [Juan] Mata and [Anthony] Martial to give them rest and we picked up more injuries, so it is unbelievable – it is the programme [of fixtures] I think.”
The trio will now be assessed to determine the full extent of their injuries but it’s the last thing United needed ahead of two crucial games against Midtjylland and Arsenal over the coming week.
van Gaal has had to deal with a lengthy injury list throughout the season with Wayne Rooney, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Antonio Valencia and Adnan Januzaj among those who are currently unavailable for selection.
However, there was some more positive news on the fitness of David De Gea with van Gaal confirming that the goalkeeper could make his comeback from a knee injury against Midtjylland on Thursday night.
