Liverpool have been dealt a major injury blow after confirming that Jordan Henderson has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The Reds skipper suffered the injury during the first half of Thursday night’s Europa League quarter final first leg draw with Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion.

Henderson once again led the Merseysiders out for the crucial game but failed to last the full ninety minutes having been replaced by Joe Allen at the break.

Jurgen Klopp admitted after the game that the injury didn’t look good but the Reds boss refused to speculate over how long his captain may be our for until scan results were known.

The clubs fears have been realised as scan which were undertaken this afternoon have confirmed isolated damage to Henderson’s lateral collateral knee ligament – an injury that would typically require around three months of treatment.

However, a statement on Liverpoolfc.om claims that Henderson’s injury isn’t thought to be too serious and as long as his rehabilitation programme goes smoothly, the midfielder should be back in action in six to eight weeks.

The news will still come as a huge blow to Liverpool as it means that Henderson’s season is over and he won’t be available for their Premier League run-in or any further participation in the Europa League.

However, the good news for the player is that he still has a chance to be fit in time to make the England squad for this summers European Championships.
