Manchester United have renewed their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos raising fresh doubts over the future of manager Louis van Gaal, according to the Mirror.

United came close to signing Kroos when he left Bayern Munich in 2014 but van Gaal pulled the plug on the proposed deal when he arrived as manager that summer allowing Real Madrid to swoop in and lure the midfielder to Spain.

Kroos has continued to impress during the past two seasons at the Bernabeu and the Mirror claim that United have now decided to resurrect their interest ahead of a potential summer move.

The German international has publicly admitted in the past that he’d like to try his luck in the Premier League at some stage in his career but it remains to be seen how Madrid will react should United come calling this summer.

Kroos has been a key member of the Madrid starting eleven ever since moving to the club so unless Zinedine Zidane is planning to overhaul his midfield options this summer, it would surely take a huge offer from United to tempt the Spanish giants in to selling.

However, the Mirror’s claim that United are back in for Kroos raises fresh doubts over the future of van Gaal as he made it clear two years ago he wasn’t interested in signing the 26-year-old, so it seems unlikely he’s had a sudden change of heart.

If this speculation is accurate, then it could be argued that United are already planning for life without the Dutchman amid rumours that van Gaal will be sacked at the end of the season after an inconsistent year.

The 64-year-old could yet save his job if he beats Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final next month and manages to sneak a top four finish in the league, but the writing has been on the wall for months with bookmakers tipping Jose Mourinho to head for Old Trafford this summer.

We’ll have to wait and see how things pan out on the managerial front but if van Gaal does leave, whoever replaces him would surely love to have a player of Kroos’s ability at their disposal.
