Man Utd In Pole Position To Land Unsettled Real Madrid Star

By on May 6, 2016

The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are linked with Raphael Varane…

Manchester United are leading to race to sign Raphael Varane with the centre-back considering a move away from Real Madrid this summer, according to the Mirror.

Varane has developed in to one of the best young defenders in world football since joining Madrid from Lyon in 2011 but despite his huge potential, the 23-year-old has failed to establish himself as a vital first team regular at the Bernabeu.

The French international has managed to rack up 32 appearances for Madrid in all competitions this season but he’s been overlooked in the key games and was left on the bench for the midweek Champions League semi-final victory over Manchester City with Zinedine Zidane opting for Pepe alongside Sergio Ramos.

This snub appears to have been the last straw for Varane as the Mirror are citing reports coming out of France which claim the defender is now considering a move away from Madrid this summer.

The newspaper suggests that Man Utd have now stepped-up their interest in the centre-back and are considered to be the front-runners for his signature, but will face competition from the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Louis van Gaal’s position as manager remains uncertain with bookmakers tipping Jose Mourinho to replace the Dutchman this summer and the former Chelsea boss knows Varane well as he was the man in charge at Madrid when they signed the defender from Lyon five years ago.

There is a chance the pair could be reunited at Old Trafford this summer and I think Varane would be a sensational signing for United if they could somehow pull it off.

A top class partner for Chris Smalling is needed if United want to be challenging for top honours again and there aren’t many more talented centre-backs around than Varane right now.
