The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are linked with Daniel Sturridge….
Arsenal are set to table a £30m bid for Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge when the transfer window opens as Arsene Wenger looks to sign a top class hitman this summer, according to the Mirror.
The Gunners boss is under increasing pressure to spend heavily this summer after Arsenal blew their best chance to win the Premier League title in over a decade with many fans calling for a new striker to be brought in.
Olivier Giroud has endured a difficult second half to the season with the Frenchman extending his goalless run to 15 games last weekend while Danny Welbeck has only recently returned from a 10-month injury absence.
The Mirror claim that Wenger has finally accepted he needs to bring in a world class striker this summer and will test Liverpool’s resolve with an opening £30m bid for Sturridge when the transfer window opens in July.
The 26-year-old has endured another frustrating injury-plagued season at Anfield with hip and knee problems seeing him miss almost the entire first six months of the campaign.
Sturridge is now back to full fitness but appeared to have lost his first team place with Jurgen Klopp opting to start Divock Origi up front for key Europa League games against Borussia Dortmund while Roberto Firmino was preferred in the first leg at Villarreal.
Origi’s ankle injury opened the door for Sturridge to regain his first team place and he scored during Liverpool’s 3-0 Europa League second leg win over Villarreal last week.
However, the former Chelsea hitman admitted in a recent interview with the Mirror that he couldn’t commit his long-term future to Liverpool and he was frustrated and not being regarded as a first team regular at Anfield amid rumours of a tense relationship with Klopp.
It appears Arsenal are ready to take advantage of the uncertainty with the Mirror claiming that Wenger is readying a £30m bid and is hoping to lure Sturridge to North London if the Merseysiders give any indication they are prepared to do business.
I’m sure Liverpool will value Sturridge far higher than £30m given his obvious talent but Arsenal will surely point to his checkered injury history as a reason to buy the striker at a reasonable price.
I still think any potential deal is highly unlikely unless Sturridge makes it clear he wants to leave Anfield, but he’d be an excellent addition at Arsenal if they could get a deal agreed and keep the striker fit.
