Arsenal are closing in on their first summer signing after tabling a formal £33.8m offer for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka

The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal table a formal bid for Granit Xhaka….

Arsenal are closing in on their first summer signing after tabling a formal £33.8m offer for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to Evening Standard.

Arsene Wenger is under pressure to strengthen his squad this summer after a disappointing season and it looks as though the boss is finally ready to spend big as he enters the final year of his current contract at the Emirates.

Xhaka has emerged as a key target in recent weeks after being strongly linked with a move to North London and it appears we’ve now formailised our interest with an official offer as the Evening Standard claim that Arsenal have tabled a £33.8m bid – which includes various add ons.

The Swiss international has a buyout clause worth £19.7m (€20m) written in to his contract but it doesn’t come in to effect until next summer so it looks as though Wenger is prepared to pay a premium to sign the midfielder now.

The newspaper suggests that Gladbach have demanded £35m to sell this summer and while our offer falls just short of that figure, Arsenal officials are understood to be confident of getting a deal agreed and the signing wrapped-up soon.

Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are both set to leave when their contracts expire next month so we need to bring in another central midfielder and Xhaka would be an excellent addition to the squad if we can get this deal over the line.

The 23-year-old is known to be a powerful box-to-box midfielder who’s also capable of playing in the holding role, while he’s got a great passing range and superb leadership skills, so he’ll bring a lot to the team next season.

Xhaka should have no problem adapting to the physical nature of Premier League football as he’s known for his aggressive approach having been sent off an incredible 8 times in his career already, so we may have to tame his tempter if he does end up joining Arsenal this summer.
