Arsenal Lead Chelsea In Race For 32-Assist Attacker After Opening Talks Over Deal

Arsenal are in pole position ahead of Chelsea to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan after holding talks with Borussia Dortmund over a deal for the attacker this summer.

The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal move in to pole position for Henrikh Mkhitaryan…

Arsenal are in pole position to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan after holding talks with Borussia Dortmund and the player’s agent about a move to the Emirates this summer, according to the Armenian News Agency.

Mkhitaryan have become one of the most dangerous attackers in European football since joining Dortmund from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013 and has scored 23 goals and provided 32 assists in his 51 appearances this season alone.

Those staggering numbers have attracted interest from the Premier League with the Express reporting last week that Arsenal want to lure the attacker to England while Chelsea are also understood to be lining-up an offer.

The London duo have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Mkhitaryan as the Armenian News Agency claim that the 27-year-old will not be extending his contract with Dortmund, which expires in the summer of 2017.

The Bundesliga giants are now likely to cash-in this summer as otherwise they risk losing him for nothing in 12 months time so Mkhitaryan could be available at a reasonable price.

However, it looks like Arsenal have now moved in to pole position ahead of Chelsea as the newspaper states that the Gunners are favourites to sign the attacker after holding talks with his agent about a move to the Emirates.

The Armenian News Agency also claim that Arsenal officials have opened negotiations with Dortmund over a deal, so it looks like Wenger is serious about taking Mkhitaryan to North London this summer.

If the Armenian international does end up joining Arsenal, he could be viewed as a potential replacement for Theo Walcott as the 27-year-old’s future at the Emirates is in doubt following a hugely disappointing campaign.

Mkhitaryan has predominantly played on the right wing for Dortmund but he’s also capable of playing anywhere across the attacking midfield positions so he could slot in alongside Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez next season.

However, I wouldn’t discount Chelsea from the running just yet. Antonio Conte is expected to overhaul the squad this summer and they have the financial power to match Arsenal with any offer they put on the table for Mkhitaryan.
